Deciduous Beech

Nothofagus gunii

Tasmania's only winter-deciduous species, this endemic large shrub occurs only on the higher mountains. It is somewhat temperamental as a bonsai. Good drainage may be the key, but it also likes a cool environment. These two specimens are about 10 years old and 30cm high.

In this photo it is just coming into bud in spring.
